Versatile Etobicoke Residence
We paired simplicity with timeless finishes to transform an outdated family room a warm, usable space (with plenty of storage to boot!).
For this Etobicoke family, we transformed an outdated rec room into a welcoming family room perfect for hosting, entertaining and spending time together. We added new flooring, lighting, wall paint and fireplace mantel, and chose mostly furniture from Urban Barn to keep the project budget-friendly.
Since this is a multi-purpose room, we used the area rug and lighting to create a visual divide between the tv area and the bar and dining area. The black metal of the nesting tables plays and contrasts against the light fixture over the dining area. We brought in a bit of fun with the pattern and texture of the full-length curtains and a pop of yellow with the pillows. Both of these items can be inexpensively swapped out for other patterns or colours down the line if the family feels they’d like a change.
In the tv area, the old 70s-style brick fireplace got a major update to a clean and timeless mantle with a mirror above for height and reflection. We added floating shelves on either side to display family photos and accessories for style. The nesting tables have durable stone tops and provide great versatility, since they can be pushed together or pulled out for company as needed. There’s also additional seating in the form of two ottomans tucked under the floating tv cabinet.
At the table area, we set the tone with a cool, industrial-looking light fixture and an art feature along the wall. The low-back chairs can tuck underneath the table for a clean look that also gives the impression of casual bar-style seating.
Our clients loved the finished result: a bright and open transitional space great for hosting and entertaining.
